Do not schedule removal until the authorized party confirms possession and the handling instructions for property left behind. Cleanout crews remove items; they do not decide who owns them or whether they may be discarded.
Confirm the handoff
Identify one person who can authorize work and answer questions during the cleanout. Provide the address, access method, approved areas, items that must stay, and any deadline. If required notices, storage periods, or legal steps apply, complete them before the crew arrives and get legal guidance where needed.
Make access predictable
- Clear a legal loading location
- Arrange gate, key, or lockbox access
- Reserve an elevator if the building requires it
- Keep pets and occupants away from work areas
- Point out weak floors, broken glass, leaks, or pests
Do not combine unknown chemicals
The EPA advises keeping household hazardous products in their original containers and never mixing leftovers. Paints, fuels, oils, batteries, pesticides, and pressurized cylinders should be identified before ordinary hauling. See the EPA household hazardous-waste guidance and current local rules.
Prepare a short inventory
A room list and a few wide photos usually tell more than a long description. Include bulky furniture, appliances, loose trash, garage contents, exterior piles, and anything requiring disassembly. This gives the estimator a more consistent starting point.
